If you are an older computer user, then you are probably familiar with the DOS environment. It's actually a primitive operating system which allows you to run certain commands and applications using command-line. Even with today's technological development, there are still many users who still have to use DOS applications, which don't have a Windows version.

In this situation, those applications may not work as expected, as the DOS emulation included in most Windows versions is not fully optimized for older applications. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem and it's called DOSBox.

This Windows application is actually a DOS emulator which is perfectly compatible with any old application. When running programs in DOSBox is just like running them in an actual DOS environment.

After installing the application, the user will just need to click on its shortcut in order to launch the DOS environment. After launching it, one will be able to run a wide range of commands and launch DOS applications. Unfortunately, there is no graphical interface available and the user will need to have basic knowledge about DOS commands. In case he wishes to modify the program's functionality and options, he can access the special configuration file presented in the program's folder. From this, he will be able to change all the program's parameters. Thus, certain parameters may be difficult to change by beginners and using them improperly may cause the application to malfunction.

Pros

It can fully simulate a true DOS environment and allows you to run any DOS program without problems. Besides that, it allows you to customize the program's functionality and options using a configuration file.

Cons

Fully using the application requires basic knowledge about DOS commands. Using DOSBox you will be able to easily simulate the DOS environment and run any DOS application without any problems.
